The selection process to get an internship at Microsoft IDC
This is the link I applied on, for summer internship at Microsoft.
The selection process involved registering on this website first, which was initiated around November or December. Next was an online round conducted in January with 3 programming problems which were somewhat easy. I believe 2 out of three problems could easily be solved using bruteforce methods by just thinking of a correct solution than finding the most optimised one.
After the online round students with 2-3 complete solutions were called for the interviews.
I was called for an interview at Chandigarh University in the February. The interview process involved 4 Technical elimination rounds. First was group fly round in which 2 problems were displayed and we were supposed to write a working code for those problems on plane sheets. Most of the applicants were rejected in this round. The rest of the rounds were one on one interviews in which they tested all the skills developed throughout the 3 years of college life including subjects as well as projects accomplished during that time. After all this we were sent back to home.
The results were declared after some days through an email.
After this various on-boarding processes were initiated to join them in the summers.
My experience as an intern at Microsoft India for 8 weeks.
It’s been just a month since I have returned from the internship at Microsoft Hyderabad, but I really do miss the work-life and environment we had there. Interning at Microsoft has its own perks, being a part of the amazing culture was the biggest for me.
I joined microsoft as an Software developer Engineer Intern in the last week of May, 2019. On the first day an orientation program was arranged so as to ensure easy onboarding and to familiarise us all with the enviroment and work culture of Microsoft. There were quite a few sessions to brief us on code of conduct, HR policies, facilities and other important points.
After orientation we were assigned the managers and teams for the internship. Then we met our teams and manager assigned a mentor and a project to work on. Next day we were provided with the systems, cubicle or code rooms and the goodies.
I worked on a chatbot project for internal use and obtaining desired information. I did worked on .NET Core using visual studio. It was a great opportunity to learn such new and untouched fields for me.
I spent my first week learning about how things do work there and how should we actually be writing production level code with comments to explain them. Writing test cases for them as well.
I really spent a great time there playing pool, table tennis and table football.
The work culture there is very flexible and enjoyable.
For us interns an Intern Learning week was also organised in which we made paintings, had some amazing seminars, and interns showcased their talents as well.
Along with other interns I went out for visiting fun places in Hyderabad such as for bowling, go carting and visiting golconda fort ect.
These are one of the most memorable 8 weeks of my life.
I am grateful to Rajesh NC, my manager at Microsoft, for his constant support and guidance throughout my internship. I learnt alot by working alongside my mentor Harkirat singh. Presenting a brownbag session with him was an amazing experience. The insightful discussions with Sudhansu Taparia and Devojoyti Halder made me an even better problem solver.
I would also like to thank Sharon Joseph and Ruchika Rocque for organising the Intern Learning Week. It was a refreshing experience for all of us interns.
At the end of the Internship, many of us interns were offered full time roles after completion of the respective Degrees.

Today an article for being placed in microsoft was published today in htChandigarh (Hindustan times) edition
As per my college curriculum there was an option for a 6 Month Internship in the last semester. Therefore we requested Microsoft to provide us an opportunity for the 6 Month Internship and thus me along with 70 others got a 6 month internship at Microsoft. It started on 13th January, 2020.
This internship was special in its own ways. All the interns reached the hotel where accommodation was provided for us, but no one was happy with the allocation as we all wanted to share the rooms with the friends we made in the previous internships. Therefore for the first two days we were a complete mess, everyone trying to switch rooms in a way at the end we had our friends to share the room with. Not even opening the bags to get the luggage out. At last we all had rooms and room-mates of our choices.
Orientation this time was a little smaller as we all knew most of the things before-hand. Few of the interns were new we were given the overview of the details from the orientation from the previous internship and were asked to help those who were new.
Yet even after the orientation we didn't had our id cards, therefore we needed someone to help us crossing entrances. We were helped to get the temporary id cards and we got the Id cards after 2 days.
We met the team members after the orientation and then we got our email and passwords. Setting up laptops and other things. First two day of the internship passed in settling down in the new environment and setting up the things.
In the first 2 months of the internship we had a chance to explore Hyderabad, therefore we took our liberty to visit places on the weekends. Along with some of the friends and fellow interns we visited many places in Hyderabad like malls, movies, Hussain Sagar lake and one of the best place to visit Ramoji Rao Film City. Visiting these places was a great experience we had a lot of fun.
Then we entered March, third month of the internship but after that all the unexpected things started to happen(COVID-19). Starting from the mandatory Work From Home till 31st March, still office buildings were open and packaged food was available for all the people who wanted to come to office. For us interns Work from hotel was not that much of a fun so I went to office for 1-2 days. Then 1-2 Days I worked from hotel, it was the point when I thought we had about 2 weeks of time till the offices would be opening so I thought it would be better get back to home and return once the office opens(I personally think this was one of the best decisions I have taken). Therefore I talked to the HR and the Manager and booked the tickets for a trip back to Chandigarh. I came back and the whole country went into a lockdown and, since then I am at home(Chandigarh). This working from home became the new normal. Although thinking office would open in April-2020 and then just moving the dates further and further only. At last ending the internship virtually only.
Fun fact : My luggage remained at the hotel only for quite some time until my uncle visited and collected that on my behalf, as no one knew it would be this long.
Technical Aspects of this Internship :
This time in the internship I was added to the existing projects running in the team to contribute to them and work on those, but as they were ongoing therefore, a lot of progress was already made on them thus, I had to understand the work already done along with the understanding of the how and why of the project.
I was given an overview of the project and the impact it would be creating when it is completed. For understanding the progress already made, I was provided the code repo and was asked to understand the flow and draw and architectural diagram for the code and explain the flow to the team members. I personally feel that this all helped me understand the code structure much better and a-lot of good coding practices as well. Thus, as much as I remember I spent my first month almost understanding the code. After that period I started to add to the project.
Along with this major task I had a chance to work on some side projects as well. In these task I had to create an REST API based application to create sample inputs for the services we were using to reduce the efforts of our team going into the testing the code and ad hoc requests for different scenarios in the messages for samples. That was something challenging as well as to create that I had to understand the input to our services properly and it gave me a better understanding of the things.
In all I had a chance to learn a lot of new things and technologies in this whole timespan of 6 months.
